Sometimes we get so caught up in different designs, colors and styles of the furniture, that we forget the most important thing, comfort and usefulness. Our advice is to always choose the coziest option. Because the perfect deck is the one that is welcoming and filled with your friends and family.
3. Combination of materials
Above, you can see a very modern deck design idea. It is accomplished with a combination of different materials and minimal usage of color. This type of approach to deck designs can be used for many styles. If you prefer vintage style, use natural materials like wood and stone. If you want a contemporary deck, go with glass and steel.
You can always make an eclectic design that will combine elements of different styles. If you are afraid that your deck can become too busy, choose a simple color pallet and work with different textures and materials.
4. Deck BBQ idea
If you don’t have the space for a full outdoor kitchen, but you like grilling in your backyard, BBQ station is a great solution for you. Choose carefully the best spot for it, the best practice is to use the corners, since this type of appliance is not meant to be a focal feature on your deck.
5. Small deck with BBQ
If you want the same effect, but you simply don’t have enough space on your patio or deck, choose a mobile grill station. These are more than enough to host a BBQ party in your backyard. And they can be very convenient if the weather is not great and you have a covered area in your backyard.
6. Dining on a deck
Having an outdoor dining area can be great, especially during hot summer evenings. Even if you have a small deck, you can add some folding chairs and a table. When you are not using them, you can fold them and use the space for whatever you want. A small grill in the corner is also a good idea.
7. Deck with a fire pit
But why would you limit yourself to using your deck only in the summer? Extend your deck season by installing a fire pit. The best idea is to place your furniture around it, otherwise it is just a decorative element. Fire pits will provide coziness and a nice atmosphere, they will also be a fun light element on your deck.
8. Fire pit table
If you want the same effect like a previous idea, but with a statement piece, add a fire pit table on your deck. This is also a more convenient option, you can move it around your deck or patio, because it is not fixed to the ground. No matter what the weather is, you will be able to enjoy it in your backyard.
9. Multiple seating areas
If you have a bigger deck or a patio in your backyard, think about creating multiple sitting zones. It is very practical when you have your friends come over to dinner. Because you have one area that is designated for eating and after that you can all cozy up with your cocktails in a lounge area.
10. Outdoor living space in your backyard
This colorful and eclectic deck design shows that you can add your personal touch to any space. Whatever you choose as a style for your home, you can extend it to your outdoor living space. In this way you are literally creating an extra room for outdoor relaxation. Just think about the weather conditions, not every rug, carpet or furniture is going to survive rain or direct sunlight. Choose outdoor rugs and patio furniture.
11. Swing

You can see how clean lines of the decking create an illusion that the space is even bigger than it is. Keep the sitting area on the other side of the deck, so your food, shacks, books and clothes don’t get wet.
13. Rustic backyard deck design
If you are not into modern backyard deck ideas and want elegant and rustic space in your backyard, this design option is for you. Whether you are designing a patio or a deck, think about the colors and materials you want to incorporate. Wood and stone are a great option for creating a stylish backyard patio. Definitely go with lots of plants and flowers. Add some airy and flowy materials for some extra dimension and depth.
14. Combined deck and patio in backyard
If you are wondering whether to install a patio or build a deck, why not do both? This is a great idea if you have a spacious backyard and want to incorporate multiple elements into your design. This is also a great idea if you want to have to separate areas for two different purposes.
The top part, the deck, can be used for sunbathing or lounging and the bottom, the patio, can be used for grilling and dining. You can use different flooring materials to further empathize the difference between these two areas. The deck can be wooden and the patio can be tiled, so it is easier to maintain.
15. Balcony-style deck
This small and cute backyard deck is a perfect example that you don’t need much to create a perfect deck design. When it comes to balcony-style decks, the main idea is the view. This lush greenery is perfect for relaxing after a long day. And, as you can see, they kept the deck design minimal, so the landscaping can be the focal point.
16. Outdoor kitchen on deck
For an outdoor kitchen on a deck, you will need to have a strong deck foundation. Many of the kitchen elements are pretty heavy. But if you enjoy cooking and eating outside, this investment is worth it. Think about your cooking style and what you like preparing. According to that, choose kitchen equipment. For example, you don’t need gas burners if you are only going to be grilling. Invest in a good and well-equipped grilling area.
To save some space, you can do as shown in the photo above. Use deck railing for built-in bench. In this way you will create so many extra seating spots and you won’t need to add too many chairs.
17. Drink rail
Drink rails are a very practical addition to your backyard deck. It is just a flat surface on top of your deck reals, ideal for gatherings. When you have a lot of people and they are chatting to each other, they can just lean back and relax. This is a great addition for smaller decks, because you don’t have to take out extra tables that will cramp the space.
18. Set up an outdoor bar
If you have a spacious backyard, having an outdoor bar on your patio or deck is great for when your friends and family come. It is also very convenient if you are grilling, because you can have everything in one place. Installing a fridge underneath the bar will be great for cooling the drinks, or keeping the food from not spoiling during hot summer days.
19. Covered deck with fireplace
This beautiful deck idea is simply breathtaking. This is a perfect example of harmonious indoor-outdoor design. This is a great executed fire feature design, because the monumental fireplace is a focal point and the furniture is placed in a perfect way that everyone can gather around it. They also used lush greenery as a natural privacy fence, which is great if you want to relax without noisy neighbors.
20. Large deck ideas
If you are planning to build a large deck, think big. Create a large dining area where you can host all your parties. Also, think about including a lounge area, where you can relax. Adding pots and planters is a great idea, but they also need to be big so your plants can stand out. You can also arrange them around the perimeter of the deck for more privacy.
21. Small deck ideas
Smaller decks and small patios create a very cozy feel if decorated properly. First, think about the location of your seating area. This will take up most of the space, so be wise when choosing furniture. You don’t want anything big and chunky. An L shaped sitting area with a square table will use the least amount of space. If you want to extend the indoor style to your backyard, use an outdoor rug that has the same color scheme as your living room.
22. Deck built around a tree
Alright, this one is not a full-sized deck, but it is one of the cutest backyard deck ideas that we saw, so we couldn’t skip it. This goes to show that even on a smaller budget, you can create a beautiful patio or deck designs. Incorporating different light elements and working with natural surroundings will create a magical look in your garden.
23. Use natural elements
This is a wonderful deck idea for those who want it to fit the environment. Photo above is a good example for how to accomplish that. As you can see, on the other side of the deck there are reeds, so they decided to plant some on their deck. They also used a natural color scheme, so nothing looks out of place. Also, you can see a combination of different wood elements, all in their natural state.
You can create this type of deck style in your backyard easily. Just follow the colors that are a part of your landscape, go with greens and neutrals and add decorative elements that are already part of the surroundings.
24. Wooden deck with complimentary furniture
If you don’t have natural features surrounding your deck, like in a previous example, you can simply use natural materials to create a backyard oasis and elevate your outdoor space.
If you need some stylish ideas for your backyard deck, the best way is to start with the classical materials. Wood decks or patios are always an excellent choice. Rattan garden furniture will be an excellent addition. For your cushions and pillowcases choose cotton, linen or any other natural fabric. Stay away from plastic, PVC, polyester and nylon.
25. Wooden decking
When it comes to wooden decking, you really have a variety of options. When creating your backyard deck ideas, first you will have to choose if you want to go with softwood, or hardwood. Softwoods are cheaper, so this is a better choice for deck boards if you want to stay on the budget. The best softwoods for decking are:
- Pine
- Cedar
- Redwood
If you want something more durable, then go with hardwood. The best hardwoods for decking are:
- Teak
- Oak
- Ipe
But if you aren’t interested in wooden decking, we have a solution for you.
26. Deck with tiles
A great low-maintenance deck idea is tiles. They are easy to install and an awesome outdoor upgrade. You can play with your deck project, add color or texture or just keep it simple and minimalistic. You can put tiles that have interesting designs on them below your table, so they can mimic a rug. This is such a great idea if you want to create some visual interest, but don’t want to waste too much time on cleaning, since tiles are one of the easiest materials to clean.
27. Covered deck
If you enjoy lounging outside, but you want some shade and privacy, a covered deck is for you. This is also a great option if you want to incorporate some elements that are not waterproof and resistant to all weather conditions. Use the beams or the sealing to install some show-stopping lighting fixtures. This will give you the opportunity to include rugs and carpets and not worry about them getting wet.
28. Embedded pool
Pool built into the deck with a sea view, doesn’t that sound wonderful? Our advice is to choose Ipe decking for this project. Ipe deck boards don’t retain heat, so you can walk barefoot and it doesn’t splinter. In this case the focal point is the amazing view, so keep your deck lines clean and simple. And, of course, make room for some sunbeds and a seating area.
29. Deck with jacuzzi
If you don’t have enough space for a pool, a great replacement is a hot tub. If you are planning to build a new deck in your backyard, you can build it around the hot tube, then it will all be leveled. But if you want to incorporate a hot tub into an existing deck, you can install it in the corner. That way you have your own relaxing space.
30. Water element
If you don’t have space for a pool or hot tub, but still want to create a backyard oasis, adding a water element can elevate your deck or patio design to a whole new level. If you are aiming for tranquility, relaxation and a spa feel, an outdoor wall fountain is a great deck idea for you. Wall fountains are a wonderful way to decorate a plain space without too much effort. The fountain will become a focal point, so everything else can be kept simple.
31. Privacy fence on a deck
Privacy fences and screens are an important element when it comes to deck design. If you like small and private gatherings, this is a good option to consider. If you have a smaller deck, like shown above, you should think about keeping it simple. Privacy fence is the same color as decking and furniture, and it has some spacings between the balusters, so your space can “breathe”.
32. Privacy screen on backyard deck
If, on the other hand, you want a completely private deck, you can choose a different option. This type of completely closed privacy fence can be used to hang different lighting fixtures, decoration, or use it as a vertical plant hanger.
33. Small private deck idea
A great budget-friendly idea is a reed privacy fence. They are inexpensive and you can buy them in rolls. There are sturdier ones that can stand on their own. Or you can buy bamboo-like coverings for existing fences on your patio or a deck.
34. Open-air tea room
According to Japanese culture, tea is meant to be drunk outside. If you already adopted some Zen elements in your garden, your deck is a perfect place for an outdoor tea room. Think about simple elegance when decorating your space. Also, use as many natural elements as possible.
35. Add an umbrella
Many people love to use their platform decks for dining. If you are planning to do the same, think about incorporating an umbrella or other overhang into your design. It will not only keep you in the shade while you are eating, it will protect your dining table from leaves and other items that can fall from the trees. If you have metal chairs on your deck, an umbrella is a great way to keep them from the direct sunlight that can make them too hot for sitting.
36. Sloped backyard deck
If you have a sloped backyard, maybe you struggled with finding a functional and beautiful backyard deck ideas. If your yard doesn’t have a significant slope, like one shown above, you can make a flat deck, but what if your backyard has a steep slope? We have a solution for that as well, look at the photo below.
37. Deck with multiple levels and stairs
If you have a very steep slope in your backyard, but still want a deck, the best idea is to make it on multiple levels and connect each level with stairs. This is the best way to maximize your space and create some visual interest in your backyard. Just think about adding some sturdy railings for safety reasons.
If you are on a tighter budget start with one level, as the time passes, you can always add new ones.
38. Surround yourself with plants
If you are a plant lover, but you think that you don’t have enough space for them, think again. Thin and long planters might be the perfect solution for you. Big and chunky round pots can be a beautiful decoration, but they use up too much space. You can add some visual appeal by planting plants that are different in height. Just keep in mind that not all plants are compatible with each other.
39. Colorful deck railing
Fresh paint on your railing will make all the difference. If you have traditional wooden railing by staining or painting it, you can achieve any color that you wish. You’ll need to choose a style that you want to capture. Think about whether you want it to stand out, or blend into your design.
You can choose between complementary railing colors. So, use the one that is already a part of your deck design, or go with neutrals. You can go completely opposite and choose a contrasting railing color. When choosing a contrasting color, think about your design as a whole so you can have a cohesive result.
40. Artificial grass on a deck
If you are not a fan of wooden decking, cover it! Artificial turf is a great deck idea if you want to cover it. Laying artificial grass on decking is an easy process. Just make sure that your deck or patio is in good condition before you start. You don’t have to worry about drainage, water will drain the same as without the artificial grass.
41. Rooftop deck
If you are lucky enough to have your private oasis in the middle of the city, then make it shine. The rooftop deck shown above is a great example of incorporating Mediterranean style wherever you are located. Put trees and bushes around your deck area. This way you are not “breaking” the space and you are protected from nosy neighbors. Sunbeds are always a great option for lazy summer days. You can add a dining table and chairs and now you have an outdoor dining area.
Outdoor deck ideas – Details for your deck project
If you are not interested in changing the entire look of your outdoor space, but still want to add some fun design elements, here are some deck ideas that might inspire you.
42. Add some depth to your deck with a plant wall
Plant walls are one of the best deck ideas. This will give more visual interest to your space. If you are worried about watering and you are not sure which plants can grow vertically, our trick is to use faux plants. It is one of the easiest ways to add color, texture and a lush look to your deck.
43. Add a pop of color
If you want to freshen up your deck with a pop of color, but don’t want to break the bank, this one is a great idea for you. Take all the cushions from your outdoor furniture and reupholster them. This is one of the easiest and affordable ways to change the look of your deck. You can add zippers, that is the easiest way to change them.
You can go with seasonal colors, you can use different shades for pillows, or different textures. If you want to add flowers and plants, but you are not a very skilled gardener, or simply don’t have enough time, choose floral prints and voila, you have flowers on your deck.
44. Include modern elements into your deck design
If you are gravitating towards a more modern feel, but you don’t want to completely change your deck, a good idea is to add some modern elements. The easiest way to accomplish a modern design is to focus on textures and materials in your outdoor space.
Choose a neutral color, like gray or beige, and use different shades to give your deck some depth. You can always incorporate black and white decoration that will pop, but won’t make your deck too busy. This deck idea will provide you with a slick and stylish design.
45. Decorative lighting can take your deck design to the next level
Good lighting can bring warmth and coziness to your deck design. Great idea is to install lighting into the stairs, like shown above. It is not just a decorative element, it is safer to have lighted stairs. And since the light is not hitting you directly in the face, you will create a more romantic atmosphere on your deck.
46. String lights deck idea
If you don’t have beams or any type of sealing structure where you can hang lighting fixtures, a great idea for your deck is to use railings. It is very important to use waterproof outdoor string lights. For a budget-friendly and eco option, there are amazing solar string lights. They come with solar panels that can be installed by clamping onto railings.
47. Deck bench
If you have a small deck, but need some deck ideas, benches are a great option for you. Multiple chairs can take-up too much space, but adding just two benches means that you have four to six seating spaces. They can be neutral and blend with the background, or you can use them as a statement piece. If you are painting the benches on your own, just remember to use paints that are created for outdoor furniture.
48. Built-in seating
Built-in seating is a great way to structure the layout of a deck. This is also a good option for using up extra decking materials. Depending on your needs, built-in seating can be decorative, like featured above, or you can make a long bench that will be used for dining.
49. Decorative pillows
The easiest way to change the design of your porch, or the color scheme is with small details like pillows. You can use them to add a pop of color, enhance your design and create a cozy atmosphere. The best option is to have neutral color furniture and then swap pillowcases whenever you want different colors.
50. Make room on your deck for furry friends
It is always nice to have our pets with us, so why not make space for them on your deck? If you want something simply, go with wooden houses. Or if you don’t have enough space, lay a doggy bed under the table, so your furry friends can lounge with you in the shade.
51. Wooden pallet couch
This is a very simple DIY deck idea. First, you’ll have to find pallets. Go to your local supermarket and ask them, in many cases they will give them to you for free. Alternatively, check Craigslist or Facebook marketplace.
First, check for any nails sticking out. If there are some, remove them. If the pallets are a bit rough, you’ll need to sand them. We don’t recommend sandpaper, since this will take ages. If you don’t have power sander, you can rent it, or you can get pallets sanded in a hardware store.
Since they will be on your deck or patio, you need to treat the wood. Use waterproof stain or outdoor paint. Once pallets are dry it’s time to make the couch.
The easiest method is to connect two pallets with a rope and use a wall as a backrest. Or you can use an additional pallet for that. If you want a sturdier couch, fix the back pallet in place using screws, you’ll need long ones.
52. Use an old tray for the plants on your deck
This one is more repurposing than a DIY project. You’ll need an old tray, succulents and cactuses. You can either put them in a tray with their pots, or treat the tray with wood sealant to make it waterproof. Then you can cover the bottom with soil and plant your succulents.
53. Painted flower pots
If you have some old mismatched pots, this is a great budget-friendly idea for reusing them. It is simple, just paint them. Think of the colors that you already have on your deck, or the ones that you want to incorporate in your design. Also, make sure to consider the plants that you will be putting in them. If you are planning to plant flowers, think of their colors and make sure to use compatible ones for pots.
If you want a more modern design, use metallic spray paint.
54. Rope planter
This one is a very simple deck idea on a budget. You just need 4 things:
- Flowerpot
- Hot glue gun
- Rope
- Scissors
Start from the bottom of the pot. Add the glue in swirling motion, but don’t cover the entire pot, because it can dry before you add the rope. Wrap your planter in rope and let it dry. If you want to reuse your planter, wrap it in paper or a plastic bag and use it as a mold.
55. Rope plant hanger
For this easy DIY deck decoration, start by cutting 8 rope pieces that are the same length. Turn the pot upside down and tie all the rope pieces in a knot. Place the knot on the center of the pot and secure it with a sticky tape. Make 4 rope groups of 2 rope pieces and tie them together. Take one rope from the first group and one rope from the adjacent group and tie these together in a knot.
The number of rows will depend on the size of your pot. As you can see in the photo above, for this small flower pot it only took two. In this way all your potted plants can have their hanging planters.
